That red thing in the background is a crimson sea fan, a very common coral. Many small fish hide behind them because despite looking fragile, they're a sturdy form of protection, and any larger fish that decides to ram into it to scare their meal out gets a painful cut to the nose - and no food. Ooh, fun ocean factoids.
